A supported home-education programme for young people who haven't thrived in mainstream — giving them structure, safety, belonging and a real qualification in something they love.
Built for Sefton & surrounding areas
Over recent years we saw a steady, growing demand — continuous referrals from parents of children who are electively home educated, and rising numbers of home-educated young people across Sefton.
In response, our Senior Leadership Team came together to meet that demand and to support the local authority with these referrals. Back in 2023, we opened our Bridge the Gap programme.
Bridge the Gap was created for home-educated young people who have either struggled in mainstream education, or who have special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) or social, emotional and mental-health (SEMH) needs.
Behind its creation, we reviewed every area needed to support these young people well — from tackling social isolation and sustaining a modern, meaningful education, to keeping them safe and helping them build a future.
The bridge between two worlds
Bridge the Gap sits exactly where its name suggests — in the space between mainstream education and elective home education. It's a supportive middle ground for young people who haven't found their place in a mainstream school, giving them the structure, safety and real qualifications of an education setting, alongside the flexibility and personal understanding that home-education families are looking for.

When we created Bridge the Gap, we looked at every area a young person needs to be safe, engaged and prepared for their future.
Real, recognised qualifications
Every young person works towards nationally recognised, Ofqual-regulated qualifications in hair and beauty — awarded by Open Awards and built up as they grow in confidence and skill.
All of our qualifications are regulated by Ofqual and sit on the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF) — real credentials that count.

An introduction to hair and beauty — building practical skills, salon safety and confidence in a supportive, hands-on setting.
Open Awards Entry Level Certificate in Hair and Beauty Skills (Entry 3)
A broader qualification covering more hair and beauty skills, giving learners a wider foundation to build on.

Year 11Open Awards Level 1 Award in Hair and Beauty Skills
Building on Entry Level, learners develop more advanced hair and beauty techniques and the professional standards of a working salon.
Open Awards Level 1 Certificate in Hair and Beauty Skills
Our fullest Level 1 qualification — a strong, recognised foundation to progress into further study, including our Post-16 provision.

For young people who've often faced significant challenges, this personal development work is vital. It keeps them safe, builds resilience and self-worth, helps them understand the world around them, and gives them the knowledge and confidence to make positive choices — now and into adulthood.
A real qualification in the skills they love
Most importantly, Bridge the Gap gives young people a qualification in something they're genuinely passionate about — hair and beauty.
Rather than pushing young people down a path that hasn't worked for them, we encourage their passion in an area they've already shown an interest in. That interest becomes motivation, motivation becomes achievement, and achievement becomes a real, recognised qualification they can carry into their future.

A programme we're proud of
Bridge the Gap is an extremely successful programme that we pride ourselves on. Every year, all of our learners are retained and go on to further education with us — and along their journey they achieve real qualifications, both in the hair and beauty skills they love and in English and Maths.
